And That Has Made All The Difference

I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.
– The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

No doubt you recognize the lines from Frost’s most famous poem. But, if you are like most people, you probably misunderstand it.

Frost wasn’t lamenting not taking the road. He was making the point that

Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.

What I took from Frost’s poem was not the indecision of choosing one path over the other, but the idea of simply choosing a path. Of moving. Of going somewhere.

Very early in my career I read a piece of advice that encouraged people to travel. It wasn’t vacations or a cruise. It was about business. Take advantage of business travel when you have the opportunity.

My boss lives 3000 miles away from me. He’s one of the best bosses I’ve ever had. We worked as coworkers before I ended up reporting to him. And had I not worked in a job that required travel, I would have never met him.

Today I’m headed to the airport to catch a plane to California. This time it’s personal. My brother is getting married.

Next month I head to our offices in Mississippi. Later this year it will be back east.

It’s important to get out occasionally. It can make all the difference.
